When shopping at my local supermarket several days ago, I was delightfully surprised to see a tub of Pillsbury Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Could it be true? Had the Pillsbury Doughboy really gone gluten-free? Indeed, it seems this new line of gluten free products was introduced this past summer, but this was the first time I’d seen my supermarket carrying it. Never one to pass up the chance to try a new gluten free product, I brought this one back to the Homestead to see what my taste testers would think. My family unanimously agreed that these cookies were excellent. In fact, the first batch was scoffed up in a matter of minutes. These cookies were the perfect texture and consistency: slightly crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and full of lots of chocolate chips.
Pillsbury Gluten Free Cookie Dough does not say it is an organic product, but the ingredients list did look free of additives and preservatives (no high fructose corn syrup) and a more all-natural choice than their wheat cookie dough. So even if you’re not following a gluten free diet, you might consider buying this cookie dough instead of the gluten one. Pillsbury is also a proud sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation.
Quick and Easy Cook and Prep Time
The refrigerated cookie dough comes already prepared. No need to mix or add other ingredients. All you need to do is heat the oven to 350˚F. Next, spoon the dough by tablespoonfuls two inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until golden brown. After taking them out of the oven, let the cookies cool for two minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet and serving to your friends and family (make sure to save several for yourself because they will probably go quite fast).
I didn’t use a spoon when placing the dough on the cookie sheet. It was much easier to just roll the dough into small balls with my hands. Make sure the balls are not too small though! Even my larger balls seemed to only make a slightly thicker bite size cookie. Pillsbury has a page on their website for gluten free recipes. Keep an eye on it, as they will probably soon add creative recipes for this cookie dough.
Unlike other gluten free cookie mixes I’ve tried in the past, these Pillsbury gluten free cookies were not crumbly at all. They didn’t fall apart, and they didn’t have any kind of a dry, dusty taste. Rather, they tasted just like the homemade cookies I used to make with wheat flour. I think you could probably bake these for a party and no one would be able to tell that they are gluten free. Yes, they really are that good and certainly live up to Pillsbury’s standards. I can’t wait to try Pillsbury’s gluten free pie and pastry dough, and I hope they have a gluten free version of their crescent rolls in the works too.
